Kings of War Monsters: Designing The Chroneas

This week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the new monster releases for Kings of War. We’re kicking off things today with a look at the design process for the Chroneas! The Chroneas is a bizarre and mysterious creature. There’s very little text available to describe it; an ancient being that pre-dates not only the Abyssals, but the Wicked Ones themselves. It has the ability to manipulate time; either slowing down or speeding up the passage of time around it. It uses this power to avoid blows or destroy its enemies by ageing them centuries in seconds. Physically, it is described as a lumbering, black skinned giant. It was the job of the Mantic Studio to piece together these breadcrumbs to create a new monster for Kings of War. The first step in this process is to create concept art, to visually express what the miniature could look like. This goes over several stage of refinement before you get to something approaching the final model. The Chroneas was tough to nail down initially, as it had to fit in with the rest of the Forces of the Abyss range, but also be visually distinct from them (remember, it [...] The post Kings of War Monsters: Designing The Chroneas appeared first on Mantic Blog.

Deadzone Outbreak: Genesis of the Nameless

Deadzone Outbreak blog week continues with a preview of the new Nameless faction! Hopefully by now you’ve already caught up on the structure of the summer campaign and found out what’s inside the new Outbreak supplement. However, at the heart of both the summer campaign and Outbreak is the arrival of a brand-new faction for Deadzone: the Nameless. Buy why did we choose the Nameless? Well, following their introduction in DreadBall and the arrival of Project Oberon in Deadzone, they’ve always been a popular race within the Warpath Universe. After all, who doesn’t like Cthulhu-style space monsters with more tentacles than your local Sealife Centre? The answer is absolutely no one. NO ONE! This love for the Nameless came to a head during the Star Saga Kickstarter when we introduced the Nameless as the core of not one but TWO expansions: Fear in the Darkness and Terror in the Deep. The introduction of the Nameless immediately saw the total start shooting upwards and we immediately had calls to make the Nameless into a Deadzone faction. However, this left us with a little bit of a problem – in the DreadBall background they’re described as a peaceful race :s GENESIS OF [...] The post Deadzone Outbreak: Genesis of the Nameless appeared first on Mantic Blog.

Exploring the Deadzone Outbreak supplement

After yesterday’s preview of the Deadzone summer campaign, today we’ve got a sneaky peek at the brand new Deadzone Outbreak supplement. This 88-page book will be going on pre-order later this week but first we wanted to whet your appetite about what’s inside. Firstly though, let’s explain a little bit about the background behind this book… If you’re a Kings of War player you’ll know that over the past few years we’ve released a couple of new supplements: Clash of Kings (which updates the rules and introduces new units) and the Edge of the Abyss book. The latter was a campaign book written specifically to accompany the online campaign last year. It told the story of the campaign, introduced a load of new units and described each scenario to be played during the campaign. It was hugely successful and helped form the foundations of the campaign. However, the only problem is that because it’s tied so closely to the campaign, some players didn’t realise there are units in there that can be used outside of the campaign. Anyway, with Outbreak we (and the ever-vigilant Rules Committee) wanted to create something that acted as a foundation for an online campaign but [...] The post Exploring the Deadzone Outbreak supplement appeared first on Mantic Blog.

Deadzone Outbreak: How to take part in the summer campaign!

Following the huge success of last year’s Edge of the Abyss campaign for Kings of War, this year we wanted to give the Warpath Universe the same love and attention. We thought about doing something based solely around Warpath or Firefight. However, one piece of feedback we received from the Kings of War campaign is that some new players were put off by the sheer amount of miniatures they would need to paint in preparation for the campaign. With this in mind, we felt that Deadzone would be a great option for the summer campaign in 2018. Firstly, it’s an AWESOME game and secondly, it’s a really AWESOME game, and thirdly you only need to paint around 10 miniatures for a decent sized Strike Team. Oh, did we mention it’s awesome? So, with that decision made, it was time to start thinking about the mechanics of the campaign. Edge of the Abyss saw locations across the face of Mantica being defended by the forces of good or destroyed by evil armies. Doing a similar thing across the whole of the Warpath Universe was rather overwhelming. Instead we wanted to focus on the fate of one planet: Starfall. We actually introduced [...] The post Deadzone Outbreak: How to take part in the summer campaign! appeared first on Mantic Blog.
